Who Wants to be Number Two?

In this year's presidential election here in the U.S., the number two spot is becoming ever more important. Due to the continuing nasty campaign between Obama and Hillary, the Republicans actually think they may have a shot at retaining the White House, even if their candidate is too old, and a white male. But if McCain picks Condi Rice as...

Sign of maturity in Turkey

"Sign of maturity in Turkey

By Amir Taheri, Special to Gulf News
Published: April 08, 2008, 23:39

Even the best writers of political fiction could not have imagined it. But we may soon witness the highest echelon of the Turkish government leadership, president, the prime minister and almost all members of the Cabinet, banned from politics for at least five years."

Democracy More than Just Elections by Craig Chamberlain

"...Another example is Turkey. Ever since the AKP came to power there has been an undermining of the rule of law. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Erdogan is nothing more than Bin Laden in a business suit. He might differ in tactics but he doesn't differ at all in his goals from the terrorist leader. The Turkish constitution explicitly makes Turkey a secular republic, with no offical religion and strict seperation of religion and government. Under Erdogan these provisions are being undone. Women, once forbidden to wear headscarves in government buildings or schools are now permitted to do so, and it probably won't be long before they are forced to do so. Already there are reports of women being attacked by men for not being properly covered. (I guess having acid thrown in your face is how the religion of peace expresses displeasure at your wardrobe.) It's pretty obvious that these attacks would not be happening if the scum attacking these women didn't feel emboldened by government actions and felt confident that they could get away with it."

Turkey: Governing Party Takes Action to Evade Court Ban

"TURKEY: GOVERNING PARTY TAKES ACTION TO EVADE COURT BAN
Yigal Schleifer 4/08/08

Faced with the looming possibility of being closed down by Turkey’s Constitutional Court, the governing Justice and Development Party (AKP) seems to be making a political turn back toward the center. Perhaps hoping Brussels might come to the rescue, party leaders in recent days have refocused attention on European Union-oriented reforms as a way of staving off the threat to their political future."

Secret understanding between the AKP and EU - Turquie Européenne - Tuesday 8 April 2008 - Actualités de la Turquie et traductions de la presse turque

"Secret understanding between the AKP and EU
Barçin Yinanç
Tuesday 8 April 2008 - 07:00

The statement by Ollie Rehn, implying that the closure case filed against the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) might lead to the suspension of entry talks has no doubt made the officials of the party quite happy.

It seems however that it sent shockwaves through not only those in Turkey who believe that injustice is being done to the AKP, but also to some in Europe.

“The correlation between the case and the entry talks was first invoked by Foreign Minister [Ali] Babacan,” said an EU diplomat, when I asked about Rehn’s statement."

Kebab oder Schnitzel? It's Up to You

"Kebab oder Schnitzel? It's Up to You
By Lauren Stokes
1:10 am - 04/08/08

In every tourist shop in Vienna, you can buy these shirts that say 'No Kangaroos in Austria.' The first several times I saw these, they made no sense to me. The only purpose I could imagine was irony, and the only way they could be construed as ironic was if there were kangaroos in Austria, but as far as I could tell all they have here is polar bears."

"Illegal court ban on websites deplored

Reporters Without Borders today criticised a Turkish court’s indefinite suspension of two pro-Kurdish websites and called for an explanation from the authorities, as the law requires.

The Ankara assizes court on 20 March ordered suspension of the website of the daily paper Gundem, Ozgurgundem.org, which has been inaccessible since 1 April and on 11 February that of the Firat news agency (ANF), firatnews.eu, both for alleged “propaganda in favour of the Kurdistan Workers Party.”"

The Turkish Golf Federation has plans to add 100 new golf courses to Turkey’s current scanty tally of less than 20. Ertugrul Ozkok: They have bad intentions

"Ertugrul Ozkok: They have bad intentions
There are two possible outlooks. One; after diminishing its own internal harmony, Turkey will look to lessen harmony in the West.

If my first diagnosis is incorrect then this likelihood remains:

Leading institutions and media organs are striving for the closure of the ruling AKP.

Unfortunately, there is nobody in the ranks of the AKP to recognise this ambush."

Turk AKP to launch wider reform package, to seek compromise

"Turk AKP to launch wider reform package, to seek compromise
Turkey's ruling AKP decided on Monday to launch a wider democratization package rather than amending the Constitution to avoid a closure ruling from the Constitutional Court and to hold talks with the opposition parties. Analysts say the AKP's decision to let the case run its natural course is a positive development but remains cautious as uncertainties hang over whether the opposition supports the package or what the AKP would do if compromise fails. Turkish PM Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday his government would speed up political reforms required to join the EU after stalling for months amid opposition from nationalist parties."

Ankara â€" APA. Turkish ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party is going to amend Article 301 of Turkish Penal Code.

APA reports quoting Turkish media that according to the amendment that will be submitted to the Parliament, the crime of 'insulting the Turkish identity' is re-characterized as insulting the 'Turkish nation', maximum possible punishment is reduced from three years to two years in prison, and any Article 301 prosecution requires the President’s approval. Sunni Muslim Turks in Germany

"Sunni Muslim Turks in Germany

* MUCH MORE about this people group at the JOSHUA PROJECT

The opposite of a well-known American proverb, a Turkish one, says: 'The hurt of a stick dies away, but words hurt forever.' Turks are very sensitive people, and they feel that they are facing political restrictions and discrimination in Germany, home to more Turkish expatriates than any other European country. In the 1950s many Turks emigrated from their homeland searching for work, and what Germany expected to be a temporary situation has turned into a permanent one. Germany has been slow about incorporating Turks and other visible minorities into German society."

Tuesday, April 8, 2008

Mehmet Ali Birand

This question is asked almost every day: “Would this tension still have happened, if the AKP (Justice and Development Party) had continued with the EU reforms and made progress in the negotiations?”I will start by giving the answer that actually belongs at the end of this article: No, if progress had been made in our relations with the EU, there would have been neither the closure case nor any tension. Now, let's go back to the beginning and review how we arrived at the present situation."
