"New Gendered Migrations to Turkey: Tourist-Traders, 'Natashas,' and Domestics"
A talk by Dr. Leyla Keough of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars
Dr. Keough conducted 14 months of multi-sited ethnographic research on women labor migrants who travel from Moldova to work in Turkey and on policymaking regarding migration and trafficking in this region. In the book she is working on as a research scholar this year at the Kennan Institute of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, entitled, "Driven Women in Postsocialist Europe: Gender, Migration, and Moralities," she tracks both the supply and demand for this labor, offering a comprehensive study which includes the perspectives of families in Moldovan villages, employers in Istanbul, policymakers at the International Organization for Migration and, most importantly, the migrants themselves.
She received support for her research from the Institute of Turkish Studies.
