None of the Above

"I wish they would allow none of the above on the ballot," said former Minnesota Governor, and professional wrestler, Jesse Ventura on CNN's Larry King Live, regarding the upcoming U.S. Presidential Election. I couldn't agree with him more. Of the three candidates remaining, none represents my interests, nor carries the excitement for those looking for some, in this election. True...

Korean War Hero

My dad often tells the story of how he was spared going to Korea during his military service in Turkey, when a cease fire was declared while they were literally at the airport waiting to board a transport plane. Or so he thought until his (suddenly turned lunatic) commanding officer (who had just returned from a tour at Korea -...

"Backgrounder: Istanbul, city of two continents
www.chinaview.cn 2008-04-03 08:36:05

ISTANBUL, April 2 (Xinhua) -- A chartered plane carrying the Beijing Olympic flame arrived Wednesday night in Turkey's largest city of Istanbul, the second stop of the global torch relay.

Istanbul, also the cultural and financial hub of Turkey, is the only city in the world bridging two continents of Europe and Asia. The city is located in the northwest Marmara Region of Turkey. It encloses the southern Bosphorus which places the city on two continents -- the western portion of Istanbul is in Europe, while the eastern portion is in Asia. The city boundaries cover a surface area of 1,539 square kilometers, while the metropolitan region, or the Province of Istanbul, covers 6,220 square kilometers."

ISTANBUL, Turkey (IPS/GIN) - Female students wearing headscarves may now enter the campus of Turkey’s Sakarya University, due to recent constitutional amendments lifting the ban on headscarves in Turkish universities.

The ban had been in place since 1988. While students may now wear the scarves to Sakarya University, which is some 125 miles from the Istanbul, those wearing similar headscarves are still barred from Gaziantep University in the southeast. Administrators there are arguing that the constitutional amendments may be “unconstitutional.”"

Kamil Pasha » The End of the EU Road for Turkey?

"The End of the EU Road for Turkey?
Posted on April 2nd, 2008 by Jenny White

Excerpts from a news article:

EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn repeated a strong warning that the Constitutional Court’s decision to hear the case for closure of Turkey’s ruling party exposed a “systemic error” in Turkey’s Constitution and announced that he would brief the EU Commission on the case on Wednesday, underlining the seriousness with which the case is seen in Brussels. Under the negotiating framework agreed upon in 2004, the commission can recommend suspending the accession negotiations in the event of a “serious and persistent breach in Turkey of the principles of liberty, democracy, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms and the rule of law.” Rehn’s warning that the accession negotiations might be at stake appeared to enjoy widespread backing from the European Parliament Members."

Turkey is not ready for Europe - Turquie Européenne - Wednesday 2 April 2008 - Actualités de la Turquie et traductions de la presse turque

"Turkey is not ready for Europe
Ömer Taspinar

Dear readership, please note that TE is publishing such an opinion. Hard times indeed !

If you are sitting in Brussels and looking at what is going on in Turkey, it is almost unavoidable that you will reach a sad conclusion: Turkey is simply not mature enough as a democracy to qualify for EU membership.

In the past, I used to think that the main challenge for Turkey was to become a 'liberal' democracy. If only Ankara could shed some of its illiberal tendencies, I believed, it would prove its political credentials as a first rate democracy and deserve EU membership. Yet now I can’t help but realize that the challenge for Turkish democracy is much more daunting than I thought. The issue is no longer whether Turkey can become more liberal. It is rather whether Turkey can maintain a semblance of democracy."

World Politics Review | Turkey's AKP: Toward Liberal Reform or Islamization?

"Turkey's AKP: Toward Liberal Reform or Islamization?
Jonathan Kolieb | 02 Apr 2008
World Politics Review Exclusive

The initiative of Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) to repeal the country's headscarf ban has received a great deal of attention in both the Turkish and international media over the past month. Analysis has been divided on whether this signals a creeping Islamization of the country or rather, quite to the contrary, it is a signal of growing civil liberties -- a maturing liberal democracy moving towards Western ideas of decency and freedom."
