Counterterrorism Blog: Turkish Government Reaches Final Decision to Freeze al-Qadi's Assets

"Turkish Government Reaches Final Decision to Freeze al-Qadi's Assets
By Andrew Cochran

Today, the Turkish Government took the last step needed to affirm a decision years ago to freeze the assets of Yasin al-Qadi, who was designated on September 28, 2001, by United Nations Security Council following the U.S. Treasury's designation of him as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist. Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan tried to unfreeze al-Qadi's assets in Turkey, going so far as to say that 'I believe in him as I believe in himself' and pressing the Council of Ministers to appeal the freeze decision. But the Council of State rejected the appeal."

ISTANBUL, April 2 (Xinhua) -- A chartered plane carrying the Beijing Olympic flame arrived Wednesday night in Turkey's largest city of Istanbul, the second stop of the global torch relay.

It encloses the southern Bosphorus which places the city on two continents -- the western portion of Istanbul is in Europe, while the eastern portion is in Asia. The city boundaries cover a surface area of 1,539 square kilometers, while the metropolitan region, or the Province of Istanbul, covers 6,220 square kilometers."

The Netherlands faces boycott calls from some Muslim countries and reports from Afghanistan do not give good news about the Dutch soldiers in the country after the release of the controversial film Fitna. Still, common sense appears to overcome strife and discord (literally fitna in Arabic) among the Dutch society. Most of the Muslim organizations in the Netherlands gave a condemning but restrained reaction against the film which totally equates Islam with violence."

Thursday , 03 April 2008

In Turkey, for most of the people in my generation, who were born in 1980’s, it is very hard to understand and analyze what is happening in Turkey at the moment. Are we threatened by political Islam? Are we going to become Iran? Is a new military coup coming up? And the most important question: Do we have to make a choice between being secular and Islamist in order to survive in Turkey?"
