Announcing Our New Executive Director

Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA) is pleased to announce and welcome Ms. Ayla Bakkalli, as its new Executive Director effective March 31, 2008.
The President and The Executive Hiring Committee are pleased to have found her from a pool of qualified applicants. We believe Ms. Bakkalli will provide the leadership, knowledge and skills that will build the vehicles to amplify and strengthen the collective voices of ATAA.
Ms. Bakkalli is highly skilled in strategic planning and a conceptual architect with experience in program and project development, grant writing and fundraising activities.
She holds an advance degree in Turkish History from New York University and under its consortium program attended Princeton and Columbia University to further advance her research on Turkiye. In addition to her strong academic qualifications within Turkish Studies, she has experience in working within the Turkish private and public sectors.
Ms. Bakkalli's critical role as a catalyst provided alternative strategies and formed creative partnerships to address domestic resource mobilization on affordable housing in Turkiye. She developed a working relationship between The National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT) and Turkish Real Estate Investment Companies (GYODER). Whereby, both organizations contributed to the development of an international Turkish real estate platform addressing issues on Turkish land registry, regulation title deed transactions, real estate deed transactions, real estate law, real estate policy and affordable finance mortgage loans. She started discussions on the role of non-governmental representatives as innovative partners with municipal officials in addressing "gece kondu" issues.
Ms. Bakkalli's diverse background also includes 10 years of working experience with 501c3 non-profit organizations. As a NGO (non-governmental representative) with the United Nations ECOSOC accredited housing and secure tenure organization, Ms. Bakkalli was an integral participant in the development of strategies on intervention statements as well as a participant guest speaker at a Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly. Most recently, Ms. Bakkalli has written a manual on "How to Conduct Advocacy at the United Nations", geared for use at workshop sessions at the United Nations. Her recent grant seeking/writing skills won her recipients a grant for micro-enterprise initiative.
We believe her dual strengths on Turkish and American culture will convey a strong understanding, respect and sensitivity for both of its values and tradition. In Ayla's own words, "These are exciting times for Turkish Americans to seize opportunities on the given issues of the day. As ATAA's strategic plan unfolds, I look forward to the opportunity to work with everyone to develop programs, projects, and activities to implement ATAA's mission".
