TUCKERTON â€" Sam Dogan of Bay Avenue has announced his candidacy for Congress in the Third Congressional District for U.S. Rep. Jim Saxton's seat.
Dogan, a Republican and owner of Alara Construction of Tuckerton, is a builder and general contractor. He is married and has children.
If elected, he said in a prepared statement that he will introduce legislation on socialized medicine so that every American will have health care benefits, and is planning a program for "a solid amnesty" for illegal immigration that will put $100 billion into the budget. Dogan said his project will not harm the current budget.
This is Dogan's first attempt at politics. Born in Istanbul, Turkey, he said he came to the United States when he was 12 years old. At the age of 16 he volunteered with Newark's North Ward First Aid Squad, which was sponsored by Sen. Anthony Imperiale, and served for 16 years. He said he then became an aide to Imperiale. Dogan moved to Ocean County in 1989.
"If you look at the state of New Jersey, it has become the most expensive state to live in," he said. "Taxes keep on going up. Of course, there are programs that actually help the working people, but there has to be some sort of control by the federal government to stop to the extra spending. Every time I went to the Statehouse with Anthony Imperiale, it was like a three-ring circus."
Growing up on the streets of Newark, he said he saw Imperiale's vision and wanted to follow in his footsteps.
"To me, the state of New Jersey is filled with corruption. The politicians are making all these big budgets," he said. "I live by idealism and I strongly believe the state of New Jersey residents have had enough. Government should work for the people. People shouldn't work "for' (to support) the government."
He said he has been circulating petitions through "a handful of people."
Regarding his plan for amnesty for illegal immigrants, he said right now there are approximately 20 million illegal immigrants in the United States.
"These are people who are gainfully employed and yet they aren't paying taxes," he said. "All I want to do is implement a system where each and every illegal immigrant would contribute $5,000 each, which will add up to $100 billion in the economy. And we'll give them residency status."
He said by doing that, the government will have a better record keeping of all illegal immigrants. When they become residents, they will pay more into the system, which will improve the economy."
"By giving residency, we would try to determine who is a criminal in their own country. If they have a criminal record, they will be shipped back to their own country," he said. "In this amnesty program, each and every illegal immigrant will help the economy and they'll end up paying taxes like everybody else."
Regarding the health care system, Dogan said that under his vision, a company that employs 50 people or more would have to pay into the social health care system.
"There are millions and millions of people in the United States who cannot afford medical insurance. If you go to a pharmacy in the United States, certain brand names will cost a person $150. If you go to a pharmacy in another country, they only pay $10 for the same medicine. Why do Americans have to pay so much for their medicine? Because the United States pays for the research and development and other countries benefit from it," he said. "If the medicine is $10 in Germany, it should be $10 in the United States, too."
The medical health program would be a federally funded program for every person, he said.
"If the United States implemented some sort of national lottery program that benefited medical insurance, it could be done," he said. "Everybody plays the state lottery. If it's a national program going toward social medicine, your prizes will be higher, more people will play it and the federal government will get millions and millions of dollars each week."
