Turkish Invasion

TIME: Why Turkish Troops Are Back in Iraq? "February is not a great month to invade northern Iraq . . . The mountains become an easy place for a foreign army to get stuck in the snow and die in the cold." The U.S. (finally) approved of the Turkish military's incursion into Northern Iraq to eradicate the PKK, or Kurdish...

A head scarf is not just a scarf | csmonitor.com

"A head scarf is not just a scarf
The dispute in Turkey reminds us of the importance of allowing 'others' emotional depth.

brooklyn, n.y. - Just as a flag is not merely a swatch of material â€" stars, stripes, sickles â€" a scarf is no longer a piece of silk. Turkey is set to repeal its longstanding scarf ban in university settings â€" setting off a firestorm of controversy about class conflict, human rights, and the rise of Islam in a country fearful of religious influence."

"Secularists have nothing to fear from women wearing headscarves

Separation of church and state should not preclude the assertion of religious identity - as Turkey is learning

In Turkey, any day now, a female university student will mark a dramatic moment in her country's history. After years of heated debate, culminating in street demonstrations in recent months, she will no longer have to replace her headscarf with a wig or hat before attending her lectures, thanks to a constitutional amendment that received presidential consent last week. However, she will know that her newly won right is by no means secure; university authorities have been threatening to break the law and enforce the headscarf ban, while legal appeals are likely to end up in the constitutional court."

by
ZAKİR HAŞİMOV*
The Hocalı massacre has gone down as one of the worst and most striking pages in Azerbaijanian history.
For 200 years the people of Azerbaijan were victims of constant nationalist, chauvinist attempts on the part of the Armenians to engage in ethnic cleansing and to carry out the politics of genocide."

Headline Junky: Barzani Draws The Line

"Barzani Draws The Line

There are conflicting reports about just how many troops Turkey has sent into northern Iraq, with the general trend being bearish. Initial Turkish TV reports (passed on by the press) put the number at 10,000, citing unnamed military sources. Reuters put the number at 8,000, or two Turkish brigades. Later television reports lowered it further to 3,000, which the Iraqi government today bid down to 1,000, only to be undersold by the American military command in Iraq which claimed that only a few hundred Turkish troops took part. The Turkish military, meanwhile, closed the bidding by warning that 'media reports about the scope of the operation were misleading and exaggerated.' (If this keeps up, look for reports of a Kurdish incursion into Turkey by tomorrow.)"
