"Turks Running for Office in Austria
This is a guest dispatch from Elizabeth in Austria.

A coalition of migrants of Turkish descent are running for election in a state election. The candidates were presented on Thursday.

Seyfi Öztürk, the top candidate for the “List for our Lower Austria” (LNÖ), is in favor of building mosques in Lower Austria. “The building of these mosques should even be boosted”, says the 38-year-old from the city of Baden. “We don’t want these Turkish cultural societies to establish mosques in cellars.” A minaret must be part of the mosque because a church also has a tower. But: “There needs to be a solution that is satisfactory for both sides.”"

The Other Side of Istanbul Review - Film Reviews-Berlin, Entertainment - Variety

"The Other Side of Istanbul
(Docu â€" Germany)
By JAY WEISSBERG
A Deutsche Film-und Fernsehakademie Berlin, Dondu Kilic Filmproduktion production.

Like much in Turkey, and Istanbul in particular, the gay scene sits uncomfortably between East and West, making it a ripe topic receiving only superficial treatment in Dondu Kilic’s well-meaning but formless “The Other Side of Istanbul.” Meant as an exploration of the difficulties faced by gay men in Turkish society, docu loads up on pointless scenes offering no insight, while a larger perspective beyond the few subjects interviewed remains either elusive or unaddressed. Best for auds coming to the material for the first time, though even they’ll wonder at the narrow focus."

"A referendum on the unknown Turk?
Monday 11 February 2008 - 07:00

It is one of the most talked-about events in global politics in years, and the thousands of journalists converging on Vienna to cover it reflect the enormous interest of a world-wide audience. CNN, the BBC and Al-Jazeera have sent teams of reporters to towns and villages across Austria, interviewing taxi drivers in Linz and mountain farmers in Tyrol, asking them 'What is it that you fear?'. They are broadcasting live from the Kahlenberg hill overlooking Vienna where, they tell their viewers, the Turks were stopped once before in 1683."

Veiled Democracy?

"Veiled Democracy?

By NOAH FELDMAN

Cambridge, Mass.

THE West doesn’t know quite what to think of Turkey’s Islamic-oriented ruling party: does it envision a liberal, European future for Turkey or an Islamist one?
