"Turkey Shows the Middle East’s Potentialâ€"and it Doesn’t Look Good

March 25, 2008 by Scott Powell

In lecture 3 of the Islamist Entanglement, I presented the history of the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey. I introduced this topic to my students by explaining that Turkey is by far the most westernized of all the Islamic countries in the Middle East. As such, Turkey is a kind of historical prototypeâ€"an advanced model whose development can help us predict how other countries in the Middle East might develop."

CrossRoads: Daughter Of The Wind

"Daughter Of The Wind

''If these mountains have a rival, it's the wind;
here the wind rules surpreme''
taken from Sabahattin Ali's poem 'Wind'

When a person believes only in wind, its magical power enables him to elude the past and contemplate the future with hope. So Alacati is a chosen spot where the wind becomes an anonymous sough, caressing the the skin of everyone without distinction. The home of wind, Alacati, is a miniature paradise where the wind views with the gods, becoming synonymous with them. Known in Greek mythology as the home of the wind god, Alacati is a bohemian haven of tranquility for ordinary folk fleeing not only Izmir, but Bodrum as well."

Ertugrul Ozkok: What did I see in Selcuk's house?

"Ertugrul Ozkok: What did I see in Selcuk's house?
Yesterday I looked at the photo on the first page of Hurriyet for a long time. Because the social structure of a period lies in that photo. Ilhan Selcuk lives in a small house.

The decoration of the house with the library on the left, carpet on the front, small paintings and photos on the walls reminded me houses around us in 1970's in Ankara.

A standard house of a Turkish intellectual.

Journalists have earned quite well money since mid-1980s.

When I look at the photo of this house, I couldn't observe such an increased welfare in the decoration of this house."

Once again the clouds are gathering over Turkey which seemingly stood on the path of progress and stability. On Mar. 14, Deputy Chief Prosecutor of the High Court of Appeals of the country Abdurrahman Yalcinkaya brought charges against the ruling Justice and Development Party (JDP) demanding it be closed. According to the Deputy Chief Prosecutor, the purpose of the JDP is, firstly, to introduce a type of a state administration on the principles of moderate Islam and then build up a state based on the Shariath. The republic is currently under a great menace, A. Yalcinkaya particularly notes."
