January 18 - The Ankara Bar Association hosted ATAA at its Annual International Law Congress, which was attended by over 300 lawyers from Turkey, the United States, European Union, Middle East, and China.

President-Elect and lawyer Gunay Evinch represented ATAA at the Congress.  Former Constitutional Law Court Chief Justice, Madame Tulay Tugca, introduced Evinch who spoke regarding ATAA activism in lawsuits that concern Turkish and Turkish American interests in the United States.

The ABA Congress paid special attention to cyber crimes, including the use of the internet and emails to threaten, harass, and defame individuals as well as to mislead the public with disinformation.  Scholars and lawyers argued that the e-sphere was subject to universal jurisdiction and accountability at the local level.

President-Elect Evinch discussed ATAA's submission of a Victims of Armenian Terrorism Impact Statement in the sentencing hearing of Mourad Topalian, the former Chairman of the Armenian National Committee of America (American counterpart of the Armenian Dashank party), who federal authorities connected to at least four terrorist attacks by the Dashnak Justice Commandos of the Armenian Genocide (JCAG).

Evinch also spoke regarding current lawsuits by Armenians for life insurance claims from the Ottoman Empire, particularly the Kyurkjian v. AXA life insurance settlement agreement and how AXA's Turkish partner, OYAK, required the removal of the word "genocide" from the settlement agreement.

Finally, President-Elect Evinch spoke regarding Griswold v. Massachusetts, in which ATAA is a co-plaintiff with students, teachers and parents, against Massachusetts' illegal censorship of scholarly material that oppose the Armenian allegation of genocide.

Regarding a Greek effort to shut down California State University's educational exchange program with Eastern Mediterranean University in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Evinch discussed ATAA's and the Turkish American Association of Southern California's successful efforts to protect the program and guard academic freedom.

Of particular interest to the Congress attendees was the case of European Union v. R.J. Reynolds, Phillip Morris that alleges that American cigarette companies used the PKK terrorist organization's infrastructure to smuggle cigarettes into the EU; the case was settled for $1.2 billion.  In addition, Evinch discussed HLP v. Mukasey, in which private U.S. citizens seek to provide financial assistance to the PKK's "non-violent" activities.

The audience included partners and in-house counsel from leading international law firms and multinational corporations working in Turkey.  The President of the American Bar Association International Law Section was among the special guests, along with the Black Sea Law Forum lead by the Azerbaijan Lawyers Forum and Middle East Law Forum lead by the Lebanese Lawyers Forum.  The public sector was well represented, including the Prime Ministry, Foreign Ministry, Interior Ministry, Defense Ministry, Justice Ministry, as well as the Turkish Union of Bar Associations (TBB), Ankara Bar Association (ABA), Turkish Union of Chambers of Commerce and Commodities Exchanges (TOBB), and law school administrations.
