17 February 2008

- Turkish columnist Vedat Yenerer of Yenicag newspaper accuses Germany and the European Union for the recent fires in Germany:

'Germany made quite strange statements after the Ludwinghaven fire raising in which 9 Turkish people died. They claimed that the fire was not a racist attack before no expert reached the fire place or no witness spoke about the fire reasons. Despite of all these strange statements, the German Minister for Interior Affairs accused and insulted the Turkish Ambassador because the Ambassador made a weak imply about the fire raising. The German people also made no demonstration to protest the racist attack in any German city."

IT IS not unusual to hear wailing arabesque music when in the northern part of Nicosia, especially in the old town where thousands of immigrants from southeastern Turkey have settled over the past two decades. While the old city centre wails a love-struck eastern lament, the suburbs thud to a more contemporary, Western rhythm, interspersed with lyrics about sex, drugs and violence."
