"After years of wandering, family finds new home

Suleyman Khalilov has been a refugee his entire life.
In 1989 his family left the Central Asian state of Uzbekistan and fled to Russia's southern Krasnodar region. The journey took him and his wife across the Soviet Union in a crammed train with their infant son. In 2005 his family of five attained legal status in Salt Lake City."

The West Loses More Ground | Newsweek International | Newsweek.com

"...Unfortunately, this trope repeated itself throughout the conference. At dinner one evening, I was sandwiched between a Bundestag representative and an Austrian ambassador. Conversation was lacking until the question of Turkish admission to the European Union came up. Both guests remarked that it was a mistake to have offered the Ankara accession negotiations to admit Turkey to the EU. They agreed that Russia was more a part of Europe than Turkey. At the same time, rumors were flying of a secret plan to sneak Turkey into the Union. This symbolizes a chronic problem that plagues the EU: any effort to present a common external front gets sidetracked by persistent questions about defining Europe's borders."

Turkish Weekly Opinion - BBC, the Washington Post and PKK

"BBC, the Washington Post and PKK
Sedat Laciner

Thursday , 20 March 2008

The national interests are pursued not only by means of tanks and guns both in the US and the UK because the power of media is regarded as a crucial tool to be utilized in the defense policy of the country. Especially in cases of military operations to be conducted against any country, the public relations constitute the most important aspect of the issue. As many as the number of soldiers operating on the field, there exist those people acting to shape the public opinion worldwide just like the litheness of a machine. ‘The public opinion is tried to be captured’ with the help of diplomatic representatives, so called NGOs, charity organizations, environment clubs, child associations, archaeology institutes, corporations, newspapers and TV channels and many other official, semi-official and civil society organizations."

Will the Turkish Constitutional Court Ban the AKP?

"Will the Turkish Constitutional Court Ban the AKP?
By Soner Cagaptay, H. Akin Unver, and Hale Arifagaoglu
March 19, 2008

On March 14, Turkey's chief prosecutor, Abdurrahman Yalcinkaya, filed a case with the country's Constitutional Court asking it to shut down the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and ban seventy-one of its members from seeking elected office for five years. He accused the party of spearheading 'anti-secular activities' in violation of the Turkish constitution. Although the court's disposition is uncertain, the case is likely to strengthen the AKP regardless of the outcome."

Kamil Pasha » Obama and the Black Turks

"Obama and the Black Turks
Posted on March 20th, 2008 by Jenny White

I had dinner last night with a Turkish-American friend who had watched Barack Obama’s speech about race. She said it reminded her of the Turkish situation. The Black Turks need to understand that when the White Turks say they’re afraid, that they need to be taken seriously, that there’s something behind that fear. They shouldn’t just be dismissed as anti-religious fascists. Similarly, White Turks need to look beyond their disgust at the headscarf and understand that the sense of oppression felt by pious (Black) Turks has a real cause. (I’m elaborating here a little on what my friend said, but I think the comparison is apt.)"

Turkey wrestles with Islam’s place

"Turkey wrestles with Islam’s place
March 19th, 2008

Imagine trying to ban a fairly elected ruling party, which won in a landslide only last year. Ludicrous. Yet such an attempt is now before Turkey’s highest court on the grounds that secular government should not push Islam on society.

It is not out of the realm of possibility that the court will decide to hear this case, which was brought March 14 by Turkey’s chief prosecutor. And if it does, it may favor the prosecutor, who charges the Islamic Party of Justice, or AKP, with subverting the country’s secular Constitution. Since the 1970s, the court has shuttered four pro-Islamic parties."

360 Degrees from Erbil: The Iraqi Kurds Need Turkey

"360 Degrees from Erbil: The Iraqi Kurds Need Turkey
By Soner Cagaptay
PostGlobal, March 15, 2008

On a recent trip to Iraq, I visited the three northern provinces that fall under the auspices of the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG). I happened to be in Erbil, the region's capital, during the recent Turkish incursion into northeastern Iraq to disrupt the terror camps of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). After taking in the view of Mesopotamia from Erbil's hilltop citadel, I asked Iraqi Kurdish leaders for a 360-degree view from Erbil, specifically inquiring about the KRG's perception of what its external threats are. To my surprise, Iran topped the list, and Turkey consistently ranked at the bottom -- even though Turkey was, at that very moment, carrying out military operations inside northern Iraq. The Iraqi Kurds indeed have bigger worries than Turkey, and the KRG leadership is actually seeking Ankara as a long-term ally. Indeed, if the Iraqi Kurds can deliver on the PKK issue, Turkey could potentially become their staunchest supporter."

Murphy's Law: Turkish Delight

"Turkish Delight
March 20, 2008: Although the Turkish ruling party, the 'Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi (AKP, or Justice and Development Party)' is generally regarded as religiously very conservative or even Islamist, in practice it is not what you might expect. During the 2007 elections (in which it received the largest bloc of the vote, 46.6 percent), it seems to have captured a majority of the votes of the country's small Armenian (c. 65,000) and Jewish (c. 25,000) communities, and may have also gotten a major chunk of the Greek votes too (Greek population is 3,000-5,000). Most Kurds also voted for the AKP. Apparently the party's anti-corruption, free market, and anti-authoritarian stances, are a major draw for these minorities."

13:21 03/19 (CEP News) Montreal â€" As expected by a majority of economists, the Turkish Central Bank left its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 15.25%, citing global uncertainties and rising food and commodity prices possibly delaying the return of inflation to target.

Nevertheless, the current interest rate and slowing demand should be enough to bring the country's annual core CPI to 9.1% in February."
