Traditional Turkish Wedding

"Traditional Turkish Wedding

A traditional Turkish wedding consists of several different parts such as going to bride’s house, the engagement, the henna night and the wedding ceremony. There may be some differences from region to region (for example in the eastern region the wedding lasts 40 days and 40 nights or in another region the henna night takes more than one night ). The Turkish wedding ceremony also has some similarities with the Christian wedding such as the bride and the groom being introduced to each others’ families."

The Daily Star - Editorial - Time for Turkey to step forward and play its natural regional role

"Time for Turkey to step forward and play its natural regional role
By The Daily Star

Editorial

Several parts of the Middle East are locked in crisis, the core cause remains the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the resultant complications have pitted world and regional powers against one another. Despite myriad complications, one country deals with virtually all other players in the region but has yet to realize its potential as moderating force: Turkey, whose good relations with seemingly apposite forces was clearly demonstrated when its recent campaign against Kurdish rebels inside Iraq was supported by both Iran and Syria on one hand, and America on the other."

PoliGazette » Turkey and the EU

"Turkey and the EU
Filed under: Europe, European Union, Turkey â€" Michael van der Galien on March 4, 2008 @ 9:01 pm CET

Mehmet Ali Birand writes for Turkish Daily News: “The most important factor is the AKP’s attitude, which gives the impression that the AKP does not give a damn about the EU. This impression is becoming increasingly widespread regardless of any amount of words to the contrary or of any empty promises. The liberal sector was almost bewitched by the AKP’s wish to tear down old taboos and the definite steps that it had taken in this direction. Its efforts to join the EU seemed to prove that it was not a religious party. It was impressive in the way that it replaced set norms with a fresh outlook. ”"

"Turkey, reassured on EU, backs 'Club Med' plan

ANKARA, March 4 (Reuters) - Turkey is ready to take part in a planned Mediterranean Union after winning assurances that it is not meant as a substitute for Ankara's eventual membership of the European Union, Turkish officials said on Tuesday.
The Mediterranean Union is a pet project of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, a strong opponent of Turkey's EU bid, but he has had to water down the original plan under pressure from Germany and other member states that felt it was too divisive.
Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Monday they had reached a compromise on the proposal, but gave few details."

Tuesday, March 4, 2008

FULYA ÖZERKAN
TEL AVIV - Turkish Daily News

The problem of getting a visa is the biggest barrier to the employment of Turkish workers in a high-profile Turkish construction company operating in Israel, said the company's director general in charge of Israel Sunday. "The whole matter is about visas. The company is currently providing employment for 1,000 Turkish workers but this number would go up to 3,000-4,000 should there be no visa hurdle," Ahmet Arık told a group of Turkish journalists in Tel Aviv, the center of construction projects undertaken by the Yılmazlar Construction Group.
