On Friday, Turkey's chief prosecutor filed a case in the Constitutional Court to shut down the Justice and Development Party, which controls the national government, and ban the president, prime minister and senior party officials from politics for five years. The party -- known by its Turkish initials AKP -- is accused of threatening Turkey's secular democracy, among other things, by using religion as a criterion in making appointments to top bureaucratic posts."

Stuttgart - Four Turks and a German of Turkish descent went on trial Monday accused of supporting a terrorist organization dedicated to overthrowing the Turkish state. Prosecutors said the men, aged between 34 and 51, were high- ranking functionaries in Europe for the terrorist wing of the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party/Front (DHKP-C)."

ANKARA, March 17 (Reuters) - Turkey's government will not compromise on plans to raise the retirement age despite protests from trade unions, Labour and Social Security Minister Faruk Celik told Reuters on Monday.
Celik said he hoped parliament would pass the social security reform bill, which the International Monetary Fund has sought, by the end of March and that its main elements could begin to be implemented in late August or early September."

I was in London when the breaking news about the indictment against the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) came, and I spent the rest of the evening clarifying the possible 'rationale' behind it. In a nutshell, the lawsuit, filed with the Constitutional Court, seeks to close the party because of what it describes in detail as 'anti-secular activities'."
