Democracy and Cola Dilemma in Turkey - ISTANBUL

"Democracy and Cola Dilemma in Turkey

By Ozi on Saturday, March 15 2008, 15:10 - Permalink

Sadly and finally another cotroversial lawsuit filled in Turkey, Turkish Chief Prosecuter Abdurrahman Yalcinkaya, filed a lawsuit against the goverment party, Justice and Development Party (AKP) demanding its closure. Another lawsuit demanding closure of Democratical Society Party (DTP) is stil going on. Probably prosecuters which could demand the closure of AKP will be eager about closure of DTP. Prosecuters are accusing AKP with being center of anti secular movements and DTP being separatist. What a easy thing to demand closure 2 in 4 parties of Turkish parlementiary, so be it, lock the door of the AKP and close the DTP, nevertheless why don’t you close Turkish parliamentary. I can hear your murmurs, “No, you are exaggerating”, but I assure you, these closures won’t be considered as exaggeration step by lots of arragont elits in Turkey."

JTW News - Drug Smuggling As Main Source of PKK Terrorism

"Drug Smuggling As Main Source of PKK Terrorism

By Sedat Laciner

Some claim that Turkey is one of the transit countries of the drug trafficking, not a consumer; so the fight against narcotic should not be involved with in the priority struggels of Turkey. Even, within some conversations, it is possible to hear that narcotic money has an additional value for Turkey. Data on drug usage verifies the fact that Turkey is not a crucial drug consumption market, it is mostly a transit country. Due to drug smuggling, billions of dollar have entered to the country. However, these are not the whole part of the schema. To clarify Turkey just as a “transit country” is not sufficient. In the mean time, Turkey has become one of the crucial narcotic centers of the world. Every drug bags, pass through Istanbul and other Turkish cities to the Western Europe this turns back as a terror, crime organization, violence on the street and loss of government power in Turkey."

Turkey's rocks of ages: 'Fairy chimneys,' tunnel cities of Cappadocia

"Turkey's rocks of ages: 'Fairy chimneys,' tunnel cities of Cappadocia

(03-14) 04:00 PDT Ayvali , Turkey -- Night descends on this desolate valley as the yatsi - the final Muslim prayer call from the muezzin - ricochets across the gorge.

A donkey brays, its hooves giving off a staccato clop-clop as it heads for home. Otherwise the village is serene except for the locals sharing a feast on a stone deck nearby, chattering away in what is, to our ears, indecipherable Turkish. The light casts eerie shadows upon holes in the cliff where villagers made their homes for thousands of years. "

Most of Turkey's domestic debates no longer include the European Union membership process, but one can't say that nothing is being done about this issue.

The debates over the headscarf in universities, compulsory military service, the law on minority and foreign foundations and the modifications in the penal code are part of Turkey's transformation pains."
