Kamil Pasha » The Maturation of Turkish Democracy

"The Maturation of Turkish Democracy
Posted on April 5th, 2008 by Jenny White

Excerpt from Avni Dogru’s column, “Turkey: Ruling a Nation Through Fear”:

…In the past, the motto of “saving secularism” as an excuse to hoard power has always worked. But, if there was a real threat to secularism in Turkey, the results of a comparative study done by the Turkish Economic and Social Studies Foundation (TESEV), a leading Turkish think tank, in 1999 and late 2006 would show it. The study shows that from 1999 to 2006, the percentage of Turkish citizens who would favor a Shariah-based religious regime dropped from 21 percent to 9 percent. In the same period, the percentage of women wearing a headscarf decreased by 9 percent even though this choice of dress became more visible in larger cities due to migration."

OttawachCitizen:The lost history of the Crusades - by Robert Sibley

The lost history of the Crusades - by Robert Sibley
Western guilt over, and apologies for, the Crusades ignores one crucial fact: The West actually lost.Like many postmodern westerners, the politician suffers from a peculiar psychic disturbance -- western-guilt syndrome -- that regards the history of the West as an unmitigated horror show of slaughter, conquest and imperialistic domination. The Crusades are cast as among the darkest of dark episodes in the history of European civilization. Too bad it's wrong. "The crusades are quite possibly the most misunderstood event n European history," says historian Thomas Madden. "The Crusades were in every way a defensive war. They were a direct response to Muslim aggression -- an attempt to turn back or defend against Muslim conquests of Christian lands." The West may now dominate the Islamic world, but that has only been the case since the late 18th century, when a young general, Napoleon Bonaparte, conquered Egypt and temporarily imposed French rule. This initial European penetration into one of the heartlands of Islam was "a terrible shock" to Muslims, says historian Bernard Lewis. Until then, they had thought of themselves as the victors in the Crusades.

Gila BENMAYOR

A timeout from the closure case against the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), the Ergenekon crime gang investigation, rising inflation, political and economic concerns poisoning the atmosphere of the country. And returning hopes after looking Turkey from a different window. These are the gifts my two-day visit to the Balkans presented me."

"Turkish epic myths live on
Saturday, April 5, 2008

[HH] These tales, many of which have been collected, and recorded because they were basically transmitted orally, are stories that provide tantalizing clues but no real facts that could associate myth with known facts or people [HH] Ergenekon is the name of the small mountain valley that the Huns took over and where they lived for 400 years until they had become too numerous to continue staying there any longer [HH] Many of the Turkic epics were written down centuries after the originals were created and in the process separate events were elaborated or incorporated in many"

Turks in Germany

"Germany's Turkish minority
Two unamalgamated worlds

Apr 3rd 2008 | BERLIN

Germany's Turks do not properly belong. But what is it that they should belong to?

AP

HE DID not plan it that way. But when Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey's prime minister, arrived in Germany for an official visit in February he found the Turkish community in turmoil. A few days before his arrival nine Turks, five of them children, had died in a fire in the south-western city of Ludwigshafen. A hate crime, many Turks suspected. The month before, Roland Koch, the conservative premier of the state of Hesse, had tried to win re-election by promising to deport foreign criminals (two-thirds of Turks do not have German citizenship). The transparent appeal to xenophobia backfired, costing Mr Koch his majority and perhaps his job."
