BBC News April 04 2008

Turkey's attempt to enter the EU is now being called Europe's 'biggest project'. But new doubts have emerged that it will ever happen.

"Turkey’s Judicial Coup D’etat

This battle could last for months longer, and whether the AKP wins or loses, the consequences are bad.
By Morton Abramowitz and Henri J. Barkey | NEWSWEEK

Turkey is at war with itself again, over religion and politics in Turkish life, and the consequences for both itself and its friends could be devastating. Last month, the nation's chief prosecutor prepared an indictment of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) for allegedly violating the Constitution's principle of secularism. The indictment, triggered by the AKP's decision to remove constitutional provisions prohibiting wearing headscarves in universities, seeks literally to abolish the party. It also demands that 71 AKP officials, including Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President Abdullah Gul, be banned from politics for five years."

"Two unamalgamated worlds

Apr 3rd 2008 | BERLIN
From The Economist print edition
Germany's Turks do not properly belong. But what is it that they should belong to?

AP

HE DID not plan it that way. But when Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey's prime minister, arrived in Germany for an official visit in February he found the Turkish community in turmoil. A few days before his arrival nine Turks, five of them children, had died in a fire in the south-western city of Ludwigshafen. A hate crime, many Turks suspected. The month before, Roland Koch, the conservative premier of the state of Hesse, had tried to win re-election by promising to deport foreign criminals (two-thirds of Turks do not have German citizenship). The transparent appeal to xenophobia backfired, costing Mr Koch his majority and perhaps his job."

Operation salvaging Turkey - Turkish Daily News Apr 07, 2008

"Operation salvaging Turkey
Monday, April 7, 2008

Yusuf KANLI

Put aside scores of other relatively less important issues, we may say that there are two prominent political problems of Turkey: Political Islam and separatism, or if we talk with the language of the famous White Book the so-called secret constitution that outlines main political goals as well as the threat perception of the country the fundamentalist threat and ethnic Kurdish separatist threat. These two prominent threats the country faces compete for first rank. Sometimes fundamentalism, sometimes separatist terrorism becomes the most pressing headache of the country."
