Focus should not be on headscarf: TÜSİAD
Monday, March 3, 2008
The headscarf issue, a matter of concern for women, turned into a crisis creating polarization and tension in society, said Arzuhan Doğan Yalçındağ, chairperson of the Turkish Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association (TUSIAD).
Speaking at the Anatolian Women Entrepreneurs Second Summit in Hatay Saturday, Yalçındağ said they warned that it was a wrong policy to try and solve the issue by amending only two articles of the Constitution and that it was clear that the possible legal obstacles that the constitutional amendments may face have not been thoroughly considered.
"The developments have unfortunately justified our words. The government seemed to give up on carrying out the legal framework in this sense, preferring the decision of the Constitutional Court. This led to a conflict between the Higher Education Board (YÖK) and the Inter-university Council," she said.
YÖK President Yusuf Ziya Özcan escalated the tension by calling on university rectors to allow students with headscarves to enter campuses, she said, adding that the tension observed between the university students is far-reaching.
"We expected that YÖK would consider the Council as a partner to cooperate with on the issue. Unfortunately, the lack of reconciliation observed in the political arena is reflected in the institutions. The issue could have been solved without as much turmoil through higher education regulations over an extended period of time."
The ongoing tension in society also harms the relief that the government brought in its previous term though democratic and economic reforms, she said.
"The topics subject to competition between the government and the other political parties should be development policies, the European Union accession process and the future of our children. In this sense, our country could gain a more powerful democratic, economic and social structure."
